Kathmandu is being next Mexico City!!!!

Not in terms of development and progress, but in terms of underground water extraction, Kathmandu is being next Mexico city. Frequent warning about the risk of land subsidence due to uncontrolled extraction of water, is being negleted. Most of the people are depedent on underground water, as Kathmandu Upatayaka Khanepani Limited ( KUKL) cannot fulfill the demand of required water to the public. Ironice fact is that KUKL itself pumps around 60 million litres of groundwater each day, which is almost 60% of water it distributes.

Star hotels and business complexes are largely dependent on underground water. Ground water Resource Management (GWMB) estimates groundwater extraction to be 2 million litres daily.  It is estimated that underground water is depleting by two and half metres every year in the valley. If this present trend continues, we'll face the problem of sinking land in a matter of few years. Experts have urged the goverment allocate space to dig ponds for recharging groundwater at a time when fertile land here is fast turning into a concrete jungle.

As a instance, Mexico city is sinking due to excessive extraction of water out from aquifer beneath it to satisfy residents in the metropolitan area. Some areas such as central metropolitan region, have fallen as much as 8.5 metres, causing damage to many buildings and ancient monuments that are located in these sections.
